Buying Gap Ups

Hi Pat,
What are your rules for buying gap ups (especially earnings related gap ups)?  For example, last week (11/27) VEEV gapped up on their earnings release and reversed and closed down for the day.  What would you be looking at, at the open, to determine if you should buy or not?
