I believe Pat answered this question somewhere; hopefully in an email directly to you. If not, my apologies; we missed it.
No, you don't absolutely need IBD/Leaderboard or MarketSmith to follow along with Pat to learn. However, in order to create and perform scans yourself, you will need MarketSmith. We recommend tracking along with the training until such a point as you feel comfortable with the chart patterns and then consider a MarketSmith subscription.
I don't mean to sound too remedial; you probably already guessed this to be the case.
