Do you by any chance monitoring the VIX at all as a part of your system?

Pat does not track with the VIX. He is a chart guy who tracks closely with price and volume.
That's not to say you shouldn't have the VIX up on your screen; just be careful of taking action based solely or aggressively upon it.
I do find that VIX action into the close, say the final 15 to 30 minutes of the day can sometimes be of use.
But, nothing tops price and volume.
